USA Mavericks 11U Teams Face Off in Jr. Spinners Championship

In an unprecedented show of youth baseball, the USA Mavericks Blue 11U baseball team defeated their USA Maverick Red 11U counterparts 2-1 in the finals of the 2014 Junior Spinner U11 Snow Buster Tournament played April 12th and 13th in Dracut, Massachusetts.

The Maverick Red 11U team reached the finals after holding on for a 4-3 win over the Maine Lightning.  A shutdown save from Austin Throop in the top of the 6th stopped the hard-charging Lightning’s comeback.

In the second semifinal game, the Maverick Blue 11U team was trailing 1-0 to the Lowell Jr. Spinners heading into the bottom of the sixth.  With one out, Frank Chase hit a line drive double to left field followed by an Aiden Sengenberger double to right field to tie the game.

Owen Podolec then proceeded to hit a walk-off two-run homer to send the USA Mavericks Blue 11U to victory and a match-up with their USA Training Centers partners in the finals.

In the championship game, the USA Mavericks 11U Blue's Frank Chase led off the bottom of the 4th inning with a single and scored on an Owen Podolec double to break the scoreless tie.

The USA Mavericks Red team came right back to tie it up in the top of the 5th inning on a Myles Sargent home run over the left center field fence.

In a well-played, evenly-matched game and one out in the bottom of the 5th inning, USA Mavericks Blue’s Nick Purdy doubled to deep center, moved up to third on a sacrifice by James Wise and then scored the eventual game-winning run on an RBI single from Kyle Druge.

Frank Chase shut down the USA Mavericks Red in the top of the 6th to preserve the win for the USA Mavericks Blue and their tournament win. Chase struck out eight and gave up four hits over his six innings of work.  Foch Lovejoy pitched five innings for USA Mavericks Red, striking out five and surrendering four hits as well.

A testament to both Maverick 11U teams came from tournament Umpire-In-Chief Ken Bagdonas during the post game ceremonies when he addressed the players, “Both of these teams should be very proud of yourselves the way you played this weekend and the sportsmanship you’ve shown to not only your fellow Maverick teams but the other teams that you’ve played in the tournament.  You are a credit to your Maverick program, your coaches, your parents and the spirit of youth baseball."

Both Maverick 11U teams play in the New England Elite Baseball League and are represented by players from the New Hampshire and Maine seacoast area
